Devshayani Ekadashi is a significant day in the Hindu calendar. It marks the beginning of a four-month period known as Chaturmas, during which time Hindus traditionally observe certain restrictions, such as abstaining from certain activities, eating certain foods, and traveling long distances.

Meaning of 'DEVSHAYANI'

The word "Devshayani" means "the sleep of the gods." According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, enters into a deep sleep on the coils of the serpent Sheshanaga, floating on the milky ocean. This sleep is said to be a time of great peace and tranquility, when the world is renewed and refreshed.


What Does Devotees Do In Ekadashi ?

Devshayani Ekadashi is a day of fasting and prayer for Hindus. On Devshayani Ekadashi, devotees wake up early in the morning to bathe and dress in clean clothes.. They then visit a temple and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Some people also read the Vishnu Sahasranāma, a thousand names of Vishnu, or chant the Hare Krishna mantra.

In addition to fasting and prayer, Devshayani Ekadashi is also a day of charity. Hindus believe that giving to others on this day is especially meritorious. They may donate money to charity, or they may give food, clothing, or other essentials to those in need.
